Non-corporate meals/ "free food."

Most people have possibly not collected food from the sea, or even thought of the notion....., but there are loads of meals around the coast that require only hunger, and the will to survive.

Clicketty click, for technical points....Littorina littorea,

After collecting, from the coast, at low tide, this little snail is soaked in salt water and porridge oats overnight.
Boiled for around 5 minutes, then, after extracting the creature from the shell, with a thin-pointed knife or pin, they can be eaten at once, added to a pasta sauce, or as part of any "fruits de mer"..

Lovely, when left to soak for a few hours, in a mild french dressing, and eaten cold with fresh bread and salads.

Hmmm...looks Ok to me. The coast where I live in Texas is rife with oil refineries, so it is not wise to eat anything you may catch. Better to garden here - 10 months out of the year, one can grow food. May come down to that.

Hi Betmo,
Ah, the eyes? The winkles taste a little like a clam, only with more "chew"..
Paul, I think the dish is French, indeed fair play to them, their reputation as gastronomers is well earned.
Maria,
Yep, you have to be careful of pollution, unfortunately we also have those
"cabrones oleosos" here in Wales.
Best to garden sometimes, I`m not sure what incidences of asthma and cancer you get around your oil refineries, but here there are always "unexplained clusters."
With stock markets crashing, there are sure to be repercussions that most people cannot imagine.
Closing down oil refineries as demand lessens would not be a bad thing!
Peace, and "bon appetit".

Have you ever read Richard Mabey, "Food for Free"? I heartily recommend it.

Hi Adam,
No, hadn`t heard of it, but after checking it out, it seems indeed worthy of a place on the bookshelf.
These days, the "shrink-wrapped" supermarket culture has taken much of the involvement and purpose out of eating.
Those who organise the national curriculum should reflect in shame,... that our schools no longer have time to show the basics of gardening and even perhaps how to properly raise and slaughter chickens/ducks etc...?
Certainly, a vegetable garden, and poultry, a pig or a goat or three, better perhaps, than a few stocks.

Peri winkles! That dish makes me hungry. I grew up on the ocean and had a rowboat as a kid. Fished and dug clams every day! Funny but when I was a kid we hated to look at mussels because they were everywhere and we had to walk on them! Today they are a delicacy! Much of what we threw back at least here is ate today lucky you have something to eat!

Hi Jim,
Sounds like a Huck Finn kind of childhood, not that fishing is a bad thing... it`s a healthy dose of reality!... life for many of us here along the other Atlantic shore is somewhat the same... daytrips in small boats catching mackerel and the like with "feathered hooks", or baited traps for prawns, crab and lobster.
Seems to taste better than the store-bought stuff!

You nailed it Bud! I started a children's book years ago but put it down to keep up with this crap. I hope to get back to it eventually. Ironic but I was thinking of Growing up Huckleberry Finn in 1960s Salem, Massachusetts. Unbelievable adventurous childhood!

Hi Jim, How goes, children certainly need books, and real-life modern stories must certainly be better than that old-time biblical fear and loathing.
Welcome Monique, How are you? Yep, the oceans are a real treasure, but we do seem to abuse them...
Hi Enigma,
Ah, thanks for the image....of mussels and crays, ah yes ineed, with fresh garlic and lemons... the mouth moistens :).
OLD BAY? Not sure about that, or do you mean E-Bay, I`m fortunate to actually live on the coast, (Pendine) at Carmarthen Bay, looking out Southwards across toward Devon and Lundy Island, whilst to the East, sits Worms head and the Gower Peninsula.

My sons are great and I will be seeing a few of them soon! I am doing well and glad to have computer access again. Now is more critical than ever. It is good to see the entire world rejoice in all our victory!

landsker said...

Hi Jim, not sure if the whole world is rejoicing... just waiting to see what happens next, given that it seems not so much like "change", but even more of the same.
